The women's basketball team, led by Ronnie Peck and assisted by MarceAnn Dunning, opens the 2018-2019 season this Wednesday, October 31st against Webb Institute at 6 PM.
Last season, the Sound defeated Webb Institute by a score of 69-30. Five Towns currently competes in the USCAA Conference (United States Collegiate Athletic Association). In the 2017-18 season, the women finished with a 5-7 overall record, 3-7 in the USCAA.
"We have a great group of ladies this year who have a hunger to win," Coach Peck said. "We have a good mix of veterans and newcomers." Returning to the team this year are Chloe Walton, Denisha Allen, Destiny Martinez, and Anna Heyward. Incoming players looking to make a mark in the program are Ashante Joseph, Jada Roberts Duncan, and Rasauna Melendez.
"Our senior captain Chloe Walton is the heart of the team." stated Peck. Last season, Walton led the team averaging 20.1 points and 5.0 steals. Walton scored double-digit points in 10 of the 11 games she played last year; her season high was 37 points against Cooper Union. Walton had a double-double against King's with 27 points and 10 rebounds, and a double-double against Cooper Union with 19 points and 10 steals.
Along with Walton, Denisha Allen looks to continue to make a large impact for the Five Towns women. Last season, Allen posted double-digit rebounds in all 12 games for the sound; she had a season high 21 rebounds against Webb Institute. To go along with her impressive boards, Allen's scoring allowed her to total nine double-doubles on the season.
The majority of teams that Five Towns will face this year are also members of the HVIAC (Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference). Going into November, the women take on Word of Life Bible School (Nov. 3) and Yeshiva University (Nov. 8); both are non-conference matchups. In December, the team will play two USCAA conference games against Pratt and Vaughn, as well as a non-conference contest against Suffolk County Community College. After the new year, the women return to face Suffolk County Community College again before playing four conference games in January. The January games include a contest against New Rochelle, who won the 2018 HVIAC Championship.
The Sound will finish the season out in February, playing King's on Feb. 2, Cooper Union on Feb. 3, and the final conference match-up of the year against Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences on Feb. 10.
