Before the season we spoke with coach John Mateyko who mentioned the Sound had a much more challenging schedule in 2017-2018 than their inaugural 2016-2017 season. Stratford University was one of the opponents he was referencing as they are a Division I team. The Sound held their own but ended up falling by a score of 87-77.
In the first, half FTC struggled from the field only shooting 27.5 percent. A usual strength, three-point shooting, was quiet in the first half as well. The Sound shot just 22.2 percent from downtown. At the half, Five Towns trailed 47-32 with John Francois leading the way in scoring with 12 points.
In the second half, FTC caught fire offensively. Alex Pena had 18 points in the second half alone, shooting 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. After once trailing by 15 points FTC was able to tie up the contest at 61 but was unable to take the lead.
Stratford was able to take advantage at the free throw line. They had a whopping 49 attempts from the free throw line and were able to connect on 27 of them. FTC was also outrebounded by Stratford who ripped in 64 rebounds compared to Five Town's 42.
FTC showed some fight in the second half but ultimately fell to a worthy opponent. The FTC Men play next on Wednesday at 8:00 pm against Webb Institute.
