Dix Hills, NY - The men's basketball team defeated Pratt Institute 87-81 in a non-conference matchup Sunday afternoon.
Kyree Sawyer led the scoring for Five Towns with a double-double of 26 points and 15 rebounds. Sawyer also tallied four assists and four steals. Nigel Braithwaite Jr. contributed a double-double of his own with 13 points and 12 rebounds, along with two steals and one block.
Damani Merritt scored 26 points on 10-21 shooting and continues to lead the Sound in field-goal percentage at 52.7%. Robert Williams scored six points along with seven rebounds and two blocks. Lloyd Middlebrooks had eight points with four assists. Obasi Jackson contributed nine points off the bench and Eric Romero scored two.
As a team, Five Towns out-rebounded Pratt 57-36, including 18 offensive rebounds for 10 second chance points. The Cannoneers shot 27.3% from three-point range, converting on only nine of 33 shots from behind the arc.
A 10-0 run by the Sound to close out the first half put Five Towns up 48-40. The home team held the lead throughout most of the second half and was up by eleven at 79-68 with 7:36 remaining on the clock. The Cannoneers then went on an 11-0 scoring run to tie the game at 79-79. Pratt turned to fouling in attempt to regain possession, but Sawyer went 4-4 at the free-throw line in the last minute of the game to close out the victory for Five Towns.
