Sawyer Reaches 1,000 Point Milestone

Dix Hills, NY - The men's basketball team defeated Webb Institute 96-38 in a non-conference matchup Tuesday night.

Junior guard Kyree Sawyer, from Bay Shore, NY, led the scoring for Five Towns with 28 points, six rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Sawyer entered the game just 24 points shy of scoring his 1,000th career point for Five Towns.

After scoring 10 points in the first half, Sawyer opened up the second half with six straight unanswered points. After a made free-throw with 9:22 remaining in the second-half, Sawyer was just three points away from reaching the milestone, and he knew it. In the next possession, Lloyd Middlebrooks dribbled up the floor and passed to Sawyer outside the arc on the right wing, for him to knock down his only three-point attempt of the game.

Sawyer now joins the 1,000 point club as a Junior. He has led Five Towns in scoring for the past two seasons as a standout Freshman and Sophomore, and has started every game for the Sound for the past three seasons. Sawyer has been named a USCAA Honorable Mention All-American for his first two seasons.

In his Freshman season, Sawyer and averaged 19.7 points per game with a 50.7% field-goal percentage. He scored double-digit points in all 19 games, and his season-high came with 32 points against Vaughn on November 21, 2017. He also led the team in assists per game for the 2017-18 season with 2.5.

Through his Sophomore season, Sawyer averaged 24.1 points per game, off 53.3% field-goal percentage. He scored double-digit points in all but one game for the 2018-19 season. His current career-high stands at 35 points from the 94-47 win over Webb on October 31, 2018. Sawyer scored two double-doubles his Sophomore season. His first career double-double came against Vaughn on December 5th with 25 points and 10 rebounds. He achieved the feat again on February 6th against Pratt with 31 points and 10 rebounds. Sawyer also led the team in steals per game his Sophomore season with 3.2.

Currently, Sawyer averages 24.4 points and has led the team in scoring in eight of the first nine games through the start of the season.

The men's basketball team returns to action this weekend with a 3:00 PM tip-off scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday, against Bryant & Stratton Buffalo and Bryant & Stratton Albany.
