Press Conference: Women's Basketball Head Coach Anthony Alfaro

Dix Hills, NY - Women's basketball head Coach Anthony Alfaro was officially welcomed at Five Towns College during Tuesday afternoon's press conference. The full press conference can be viewed below.

Alfaro is a previous CUNY Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and NJCAA Region XV Coach of the Year. He has recently served as the girls varsity basketball coach at Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School, and the head coach for women's basketball at LaGuardia Community College for four seasons. At LaGuardia, he he participated in the CUNYAC Tournament and posted the highest team GPA for the 2015-16 season.

Five Towns College President David Cohen helped to open up today's press conference and discussed the development of the athletic program. "It's a great time to be at Five Towns College. The expansion of student services and programs is just unprecedented in the history of the institution." stated Cohen. "The expansion and growth of the athletic program, the quality of the coaches, trainers, and the facilities that are available here are through the roof. I look forward to Five Towns College continuing to grow and expand."

Athletic Director Matt Guercio discussed the interview process in the search for a new coach and his impression after first meeting Alfaro. "After speaking with Coach Alfaro, we immediately connected. We were able to talk about my vision and the future for the development of the athletics program, his vision for building a program, and what we could do to make great things happen here." stated Guercio. "It was evident that Coach Alfaro was going to be our choice to lead our women's basketball program."

During the press conference, Coach Alfaro took the time to discuss his plans and beliefs, and answered questions from the audience. "I believe in building something that we can all be proud of," stated Alfaro. He continued, "I believe that here at Five Towns it's an unknown commodity and the support that the administration has given in such a short time will make something great for these young women. I believe that we will be creating young women to be a better version of who they are today, tomorrow."

When asked what separates him from other coaches, Alfaro responded "Knowledge of the game is only a small part of being a coach. I think sometimes it gets convoluted through the process. People believe because they have more basketball knowledge, that makes them a great coach." Alfaro continued, "I believe that looking at everybody from an individual standpoint is going to help create the basis of the program for years to come."

The women's basketball team is currently scheduled to open up the 2019-20 season on November 11th with an away game at Davis-Word of Life College. Five Towns College will be hosting the 2020 HVIAC Men's and Women's Basketball Championships on February 15th-16th.
